I am a freelance writer near Columbus, Ohio. I quit my corporate job in January of this year and I am living my dream. Writing is my passion and I have spent six months settling into the freelance world, and now I am ready to expand, and put myself out there like I never have before.
In January, the beginning, I spent so much money to have someone build a website for me. I tried to be as specific as possible about what I wanted. I researched websites and blogs that inspired me and that were successful, and my website still looks...ugh. Just not right. Cheap, maybe? It's not terrible, just not as good as a lot of my competition.
I sort of left it alone for a while, did my freelance thing anyway, made money from word of mouth and LinkedIn.
But now I have gone back to the website and made some changes, I revamped some things, just to make it more me. I am ready to start truly social media managing, growing my audience, and increasing my clientele. My worry is that people won't want to come read my weekly blog updates because the website looks crappy.
My question to my fellow entrepreneurs is, should I try throwing more money at a better website designer who can help me get the right image across? Or, should I work on growing my audience even though the website isn't perfect? I really want to jump into learning social media management for my business, but not if my website will be detrimental to my business in the long run.
Again, the website isn't bad, it just doesn't look as professional as many of the writers in my area. Thoughts?
