Should I abandon any development on this site? earn by blogging adsense income

I'm sure its an age old story but I wanted to see if there is any way I could salvage the site.

The site is 5 months old and has about 25 articles (~50K words). Its developed towards monetizing with amazon affiliates. Traffic was good and site made its first $ in april this year. Social media has good following ~600 page likes on fb and twitter followers.

Started to link build and against better judgement "bought" couple of sponsored links (do follow, DA 65) and Hoth grey package to give it a extra initial boost. Everything was going well and KW ranking in SERP was climbing.

Because of some image copyright issues, I had to re-do most of the sites images and structure the site better. All of a sudden KW ranking starts dropping, so does traffic volume and google starts de-indexing the KW's.(However, new KW's are climbing and doing well)

I checked the manual action on search console and nothing there. Removed any spammy looking backlinks. No changes any where.. main KW SERP's wont go below 20.

Few people recommended that I might be hit with google penalty and should just forget the site and not do any new development.

Few people recommended I keep doing what I'm doing with new KW and white hat methods.

Any advice?! because I'm about to ramp up on new articles for sub niche and few guest posts in this niche.
