Websites claiming "partners" and "customers" question. entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

Start up companies websites often claim to have big names as their 'partners' or 'customers' then have the logo grayscaled. Some start ups randomly place a large companies logo on their sites, too. Do you think these companies actually got permission to use these logos? What are the legalities on this? Is there a reason outside of aesthetics that the logos aren't in colour?
