Basic details: a heavy good, non-tech, manufactured in an Asian country, to be sold in the US market (at least to start with). I'm still in the brainstorming stages and probably do not have the required capital yet, but I am curious to learn how this might work.
This product already exists, but is not yet well-known, and most (but not all) of what is available tends to be at a rather high price point. More importantly, it is still in the "artisanal" stage to some extent, and it is not yet possible to get it mass-produced very quickly. I am hoping to find some way to offer a less boutique version* once I am in a country where these may be manufactured, although I think that a somewhat large minimum order may be necessary to generate a viable margin (after shipping and duties).
*By "less boutique", I mean to say that I'm trying to offer this product at a price point where people would switch from "conventional" to "organic," to use a food analogy.
What is the best way to approach this scenario? I am inexperienced at this, so these are the two paths I thought of—I'm sure there are more:
(a) Approach a supplier, ask about the possibility of a deal on a large order, get product photos taken (and possibly video), build an attractive website to collect emails, do a marketing campaign, then, once critical mass is reached, tell the supplier to start production, and ship each item as it is completed? Major disadvantage is that lead time would be unpredictable, as it's essentially a bus that does not depart until it is full. Warehousing costs may also apply but should be cheap in the manufacturing country.
(b) Approach a supplier with enough capital to place a large order, place said large order, build the website, do the marketing campaign, ship the whole batch to a warehouse in the US. Obviously I'd be able to fulfill orders immediately this way (and probably get a better deal from the supplier as I'm approaching them with an order from the get-go), but the cost of warehousing in the US would probably negate the savings on shipping one big batch across the Pacific, making the margin razor-thin or perhaps eliminating it altogether.
Otherwise, how do you gauge demand or pique consumer interest without a firm lead time for product delivery? Or even just to test the viability of the idea?
