Hey guys,
I’ve been looking to start a business for some time now, being a lurker here…reading some articles there (you know the drill, a wantpreneur).
I'm working as a graphic designer for almost 2 years and I'm bored of the same projects and of the 9 to 5 routine. I decide to (at least) start a side project that would bring some extra money, some new engagement and why not fun. I had always dreamt of being a photographer (I'm pretty good at it) but I was never confident I could earn some decent money from it. So, I finally decided to build my designer portfolio and start helping new clients (clients that appreciate and value well executed design).
I know, sales and marketing are the backbone of every business so, here are some questions that will (hopefully) help me reach new clients: *should I try to be the big fish in the small pond? Is finding a niche and narrowing down my options a wise move? I have extensive design experience in the real estate market. *where to get my clients from? I wouldn’t go down the classic route of uploading my works on Upwok, Freelancer, People per Hour…but I would try Reddit and LinkedIn Ads? What is your input on this strategy? *cold emailing? How do you feel about that? *what is important to you when choosing a graphic designer? *how/where did you find your graphic designer?
A few things about me: I’ve been a maritime officer, lovely job but I was unhappy with the lifestyle – too much time away from the family. I quit and opened a small pub with some friends – my first business I got into where I learned a lot (the pub is still running but it was not bringing enough revenue for 2 owners, so I finally made my exit). During the time I owned the pub I started learning graphic design, I really loved doing logos. I build a website where I’ve done a lot of free logos for a few months (to sharpen up the skills) and then added some logo packages and started getting some money. After one year I kind of lost interested, burned out I guess + a mild depression. Fast forward 3 years of freelancing + 1 lovely daughter, I was offered a job of graphic designer. I took it and here I am after almost 2 years of employment – during this period I managed to take my design skills to the next level + I got some solid freelance projects (thanks to one of my colleagues).
Thanks for your time!
EDIT - trying to edit the questions to look like a list
