Three of my biggest problems have always been: anxiety, overthinking, and sometimes being easily distracted.
My mind was constantly racing with thoughts about how much money I have (am I doing Ok or am I a missed invoice away from needing to "get a real job" to pay the bills?), what I have to do, things I want/should do, things to keep track on, etc. - that I often got easily distracted and lost focus from what really matters in my business: doing the things that puts money in my bank account.
So, I built a dashboard - and I'd like to tell you a bit of what I track, how it helped me, and some tips if you want to do something similar.
Something like this seems like such common sense though that I'm almost hesitant to share it as everyone else might already be using something similar.
What I built
It's a small project that took me a day to program: http://ift.tt/2yU21ER (I've blurred out sensitive data)
It basically tracks things which I feel are important for me to keep track of, such as:
-
How much money I have and how much is coming in and how long this money will last me at my monthly expenses (I always worried that I was broke, until I finally put everything down)
-
What projects I have and which have items I can work on and which are awaiting the client for things (to know what to focus on)
-
Articles/Reddit posts I want to read but haven't had the time to focus on yet
-
Things I should do daily
-
Weather (being solar-powered, this is important to me)
-
The state and health of my main server which I host client projects on
-
The 'current focus' for the next X days. Basically, I focus on this and don't work on anything else unless it's urgent
-
Business plans/ideas. No more forgetting interesting ideas. I put them here and when the time is right, I can start on them
-
The best times to wake up on if I go to sleep now (based on sleeping cycles (I just copied the calculation from http://sleepyti.me/))
-
And of course - how much money I'm losing on Stellar and TRON crypto coins :)
The system is actually unfinished as right now I just enter data directly into the database (except for weather/sleep time/crypto values which are live). But it does its job quite well. Once I start my own webshops, I'll also integrate live sales data into this.
How it helped me
As I've been anxious about money all my life, it really helps to know how much I have. I no longer need to keep wondering if "I have enough", I just see it on my dashboard and I know.
It also helped me to keep track of my life and work my way. The issue with to-do lists and other similar products is that it's built for a general audience. My 'system' is built with my needs in mind.
So now I am much better able to not think about things and only focus on action, as this system answers most of the questions that often took time away from actual work.
If you want to do something similar
If you're a competent programmer, something like this shouldn't take you more than a day or so to put together. I've purchased an extra screen so I can always have my dashboard on but this may be overkill for some.
If you're not a programmer though, what I suggest if you want something similar is to buy a whiteboard. Yes it'll be "less intelligent" than a program, but you'll still be able to use it to always have an "at-glance" view of what's important to you.
The things I track may not all matter to you, but perhaps take it as a small guide on the kind of things you can track so you're better able to stash them from your mind and focus on what you should be doing.
