Is direct bot spam harmful to SEO? If so, is there any recourse to prevent or reduce it? earn by blogging adsense income

I help operate a Shopify eCommerce store. Over this past month, we've noticed a huge spike in what is almost certainly a bot.

  • The bot visits comprise nearly 5% of our traffic, and are generally increasing.
  • These visits are all direct (not organic).
  • Every visit is a "New User".
  • All visits are from Boardman, Oregon with the Analytics hostname of either "amazon technologies inc." or "amazon.com inc.". So it's Amazon's data center in Boardman.
  • The bounce rate is incredibly high (~99.9%), the pages/session is always 1.0, and the average session duration is < 1 second.

We can filter out the data in Analytics -- that's not the problem. What we're worried about are any negative ramifications from a relatively young eCommerce site (< 1 year) being bombarded by some bot.

I'm hoping somewhere here knows much more than me about this.

  1. Is this volume of direct bot traffic harmful to our website in terms of SEO (or in some other way we're not thinking of)?
  2. If so, do we have any recourse to prevent or reduce this traffic?

Thank you for any input.
