Just started doing SEO, got a few questions earn by blogging adsense income

Just started getting into SEO for a home remodel company. Got a few questions on some things that confused me.(On mobile so sorry for format) Thank you.

1. If I get backlinks frm directories life dmoz-odp.org, or kudzu.com,would they help or harm my ranking?

2. How many keywords should I have for the meta tag in each page?

3. If i have backlinks referring to me but the link standalones in the page, is that harmful?

4. How do I check if a keyword is low competition, high volume? (Free method or cheap method preferred)

5. When should I start running ads on Adwords, or is it not even needed with my website if it's ends up on front page?
