So, I'm in the process of developing a web based application, which provides a service for a specific industry. I think the idea is good and fairly unique. I have seen similar websites, but nothing that provides what I'm looking to provide. I think I may have found a gap in the market, which might even change the whole industry if successful. I'm very passionate about this idea and am looking to quit my job in IT Consulting to go at this full time (yes, friends and family think I'm stupid too).
I have a few concerns though:
I have never launched a project as big as this (well I hope it is). So I would like to hear from others who have been successful in launches and in general from anyone who might be able to provide a bit of advice.
- In terms of launches, should I aim to grow organically, bare in mind I am a 1 man band bootstrapping this whole process. One of the concerns I have is, the web based service can be replicated quickly (provided they have a strong team behind them) and marketed a lot more aggressively to become successful.
- Alternatively, should I seek out that the idea itself is sound by implementing it, then understanding the first handful of customers and their needs? Eventually, I would have to seek out VC funding (if this is even possible) and exploit from that basis.
This post might be slightly confusing, but the underlying question I'm trying to answer is, whether I can be successful launching a unique service in a highly competitive market by simply bootstrapping the whole process? It would definitely be great to hear from other start-up / entrepreneurs who were able to overcome their competitors from replicating their idea.
