So we took the plunge (thanks to the good folk of r/Entrepreneur, really appreciate the advice to all the sub!) and launched our Android beta app of [Surf Sharing] (http://ift.tt/2z6y3Qw) to ~50 signup Drivers on October 1st, then ~45 signup Passengers on October 5th (the delay was to allow time for Drivers to offer Lifts.) For background, it's a lift-sharing app for surfers in Ireland, run on a drivers-offer-lifts, fuel-cost-sharing basis (so drivers make no profit but just pay the proportionate share of the fuel cost of a journey.)
Our lead developer (I'm one of the two other, non-technical founders) tried to code what he could in Swift, but couldn't manage, so we resolved to just launch on Android and not keep delaying. (For context, he's in final year of a CS degree, and as it's a surfer lift-sharing app in Ireland, the best season is October to early December - hence why we still went ahead.)
Well now, we have the iOS app (finally) under development by a decent freelancer via Upwork (did video interviews, etc., didn't have to give source code or pay in advance and will audit the Swift code and only pay when the iOS app is approved by Apple and listed in the App Store).
The three big issues now are,
1) Of our Android drivers that have signed up, downloaded the app from the Dropbox link (http://ift.tt/2gcy1PX if you're feeling curious), created Accounts, and verified them by agreeing to Terms and Conditions on our website and submitted a Driving licence photo by email,
only ONE has actually offered a Lift. This was for two days later, midweek, and going a short distance from where he lived in a rural part of the island, AND there were no Passengers on the App at the time (so our tranches-release took too long, essentially.) No Passengers could request a Seat, so it expired (I contacted him to explain and he was understanding, but still frustrating for us.) Since then, no Lifts have been offered.
2) Although I want to find out why he and the other 7 verified Drivers haven't bothered to offer a Lift after going through all that admittedly convoluted signup/download/register/verify Account process, are User Interviews really that much use at this stage? I want to keep those Drivers that seem most committed engaged after all, but really it could be a signal that we just need to pivot.
3) If we do go ahead with User Interviews, what is the best way to ask for them, conduct them (i.e. via phone call, thorough email survey, video call), and what questions should we ask for some actionable data (as opposed to, "Why won't you offer a damn Lift?!?)
Any and all advice/condemnation/incredulous denunciations are appreciated - sorry for the length!
