Seeking marketing tips on shoestring budget for Side-Hustle - The Daily Donald. entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

Hey guys and gals! Long time lurker, first-time poster. I'm a software engineer by trade, who quit my last job at one of the big 4 to start a beef jerky company. But I'm not here to talk about that (maybe some other time), I'm here to talk about, and hopefully get some tips regarding my latest side hustle, The Daily Donald.

I needed a gift for a very... liberal friend of mine. I decided to get her a page-a-day tear away calendar of ridiculous Trump quotes, and surprisingly there weren’t any options with quality content and good aesthetics. So, I gathered a group of buddies together to make The Daily Donald a reality. I assumed it would be a good way to learn about prototyping a physical product and getting it made… and it meant I could get my friend the gift she never knew that she has always wanted. We had a few early stumbles, but we’ve now got our first batch of sample’s in and they’re everything we could have imagined and more! We are going to be initially launching on Kickstarter so we can assess demand without having to liquidate our beanie baby collections to cover manufacturing costs.

Sales pitch aside, I’ve got some real questions about marketing a novelty product like this that I hope you guys can give me some pointers on. We started things in August so we’re moving fast to get these bad boys out the door before the Christmas holidays. We’ve got a pretty straightforward demo, people who enjoy a good laugh, probably drifting left politically. The question becomes, on a shoestring budget, what kind of mediums should I use to appeal to a politically motivated crowd. Do I carpet bomb anti-trump facebook pages? Do I reach out to media personalities? Journalists? How do I captivate their attention without being too wordy (like I am now). Is Twitter an effective medium? How the hell do you convey an idea to someone and let them know you'd like to collaborate in 140 characters or less? Would a Medium post be effective? We're confident The Daily Donald can be a hit, but we acknowledge we need to get the word out there for it to realize it's full potential.

If anyone has any experience in this space and has some advice, I’d be immensely appreciative. Hell, even if you don’t have any experience, I’d love to hear your ideas and suggestions for quick exposure. I'm happy to answer any questions about the process or even some of the road bumps we encountered. Obviously, in addition to seeking advice, this is also a not-so-subtle stab at spreading the word, so I want to invite you to check out our website. I'm super excited for our Kickstarter and we've got some hilarious rewards that we partnered with some very talented people to bring to our supporters. Thanks for your time! Looking forward to hearing from you guys!

tl;dr Looking for tips on raising awareness on a novelty political calendar on a short timeline. Mediums of exposure, personalities, suggestions, proposals, questions… all are welcome!
