Hey there everyone! I run a community website (using my website's Reddit account as a sort of throwaway since I'll include my link) and have spent the last year or so building up a pretty decent userbase from my NJ city.
I originally started this project as a purely "volunteer" thing, meaning I wasn't looking to make anything from it. But as I've chosen to add new features, programs, etc. things have gotten pretty costly and I'm just eating that for now.
I've tried a few methods of monetization, but was really set on "deals". I felt this was something that consumers, as well as businesses, would be interested in. However, businesses don't seem keen on paying anything for their deals and expect it for free. I've tried talking to them about how this is a service, just like their own, and they expect to be paid - just as I do.
It's gotten to the point where I feel like I'm banging my head against the wall, because I believe in what my team and I are doing (promoting community journalism, political engagement, etc.) but I can't seem to figure out what I should do.
I'd appreciate any feedback, experience, etc. Please feel free to ask any questions!
