I graduated Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Texas at Austin as a first-generation college student with a Bachelor’s degree in Government, History, and the Humanities Honors program. I researched conflict and genocide and published a portion of my thesis. In 2011, I had the vision for traveling the world. Every decision I have made since is towards that end. I am living that vision, my dream.
I served in UT’s Office of Admissions for three seasons where I reviewed and scored thousands of college applications. I served about 65 area Dallas-Fort Worth high schools from the lowest income, inner-city to some of the nation’s wealthiest zip codes. There is a lot of anxiety and uncertainty surrounding college admissions, and universities aren’t always forthcoming or transparent with information.
I fill that niche. I am the only former UT counselor who has created a business specializing in UT-Austin admissions, which received around 51,000 undergraduate applications last year steadily increasing by 10% annually since 2007.
My business is cyclical as you can see from my 2017 revenue. August 2017 is when I achieved my first $10,000 profit month (minimal expenses.) For Spring/Fall 2018, I have 52 clients up from 27 the year before and 10 in 2015. 16 came from referrals (friends, family, previous clients, other professionals), 12 from Youtube, 11 from organic Google searches, 5 after reading my book, 4 from Reddit, and 4 other/unknown.
I was the first moderator brought onto /r/applyingtocollege helping increase subscriptions from around 4,000 in October 2015 to over 20,000 today.
I travel the world like a backpacker. I’ve visited 30 countries this year, 36 last year, and 27 in 2015. I completed a Fulbright Fellowship teaching English in rural Malaysia in 2014. I’ve gotten rid of almost everything except my books at my parent’s house and what fits in my 44L backpack. Here is the map of my four years abroad.
I maintain a high level of productivity despite moving so much and not having a base. I write prolifically, discussing my methods and mindset in this post. I’ve written many hundreds of thousands of words that are private.
From Christmas until early June 2017, I conceived of, wrote, edited, and published my book “Your Ticket to the Forty Acres,” which I consider the definitive guide to UT-Austin and therefore holistic review college admissions. I converted that book into premium content on Teachable “Getting into Texas Universities” where I provide application writing and review modules that I’ve not seen elsewhere.
I also read a lot averaging a little less than one book per week from a variety of authors, eras, and genres. You may notice an almost total lack of literature that is routinely shared in posts like these. Most of my creative business breakthroughs arrive indirectly from dedicating considerable time to reading and writing. My reading list. (I don’t own an e-reader).
I do not fit neatly into any community or subreddit (travel, digital nomad, writing, entrepreneurship, education.) Almost every aspect of me is unconventional. I view entrepreneurship, travel, and writing as vehicles for creativity and injecting randomness into my life. My lifestyle is less about wealth accumulation and more about finding meaning and purpose.
My life allows me to maximize what I enjoy doing: socializing, reading, writing, and being active, in that order. I minimize things I prefer not to do. I maintain deep and meaningful relationships with people around the world. We often make great efforts to spend time together. I like to send postcards.
You’re welcome to ask me anything. I hold unorthodox views on nearly everything.
Consider questions relating to: trials and errors running a business far from your target market; things that didn’t work; failures, setbacks, and self-doubt; learning the importance of content the hard way; growth and competition; eliminating distractions; my influences; how the humanities intersects with business; writing, self-publishing, and marketing a book to complement and build your brand; non-tech entrepreneurship; crafting high quality content; living independent of any community or group; integrating different identities; flexible costs and runway; getting started and taking the plunge; what’s next.
Thanks for stopping by.
