My mother lives in an extremely rural area- and I do mean extreme - what is something that she can realistically start doing? entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

This question has been asked before, but when people say "rural" on here, they seem to mean just outside of a city.

To be clear, when I say "rural" in this case, I mean a population of less than 500, and the nearest "city" is 3 hours away, two of which are in two different states. 90% of the valley is farmland, and 80% of the surrounding 6 valleys are also farmland. 80% of the mountainous land is owned by Sierra Pacific Industries or other smaller & local logging companies. The other 10% of both of those is either BLM or National Forest, the other 10% is probably houses and people.

My dad is in the logging industry and makes $100/hr, but it's not enough because he owns his machine and has to pay for insurance/maintenance of it which comes out to around $4k a month.

My mom currently works at the medical center doing medical billing. She has been pretty mistreated there, and IMO really underpaid considering she is the only person who knows how to do her job. She has tried to quit 5 times because of how undervalued she feels, just to get a raise because there is literally no one else who wants to, or even CAN, do her job in a 300 mile radius. Even after all this, she only makes $14/hr after working there for 15 years...

They can't move because, well, they just got a different house for one, and two, my dad thinks the giant town of 500 has too many people and wants to stay 30 miles out of it like they do already.

In the two towns in the valley: The main one has a post office, a bar, a grocery store, a gas station, and an insurance company. This is the one that has had consistently 500 people in it for the last 30 years. The other has a post office, gas station, grocery store, and...no, that's it. This one is about 300 people. There is a bigger town over the mountain that has about 2,000, and the next biggest one is 5k I think but it's an hour away. It snows kinda heavily so travel in the wintertime is not impossible but not something you want to do. So I hope that sets the scene for "rural".

Knowing that the two main industries are logging and ag, basically everything that is set up to sell in town is to cater to those two industries. Oh, but there is LOTS of old people, but the lawn maintenance is saved for the kids to make money in the summer, not that my mom could do that anyway.

So I was thinking, does anyone know the cheapest way to set up a drinking establishment in the smaller town? It would be 20-30 minutes away from the main/bigger town and people do drive to and from that town to get to he bar in town, but I also know that not too many people would be around to even keep afloat, so it would have to be a very cheap building. We may be rural, but we are still in California.

Something that caters to the older people. There was a bus that took the elderlies to the store so they could shop or go to the casino an hour away, or go visit friends or whatever but it was funded by the county and then it ran out of funding and now that doesn't exist. The old ladies seemed to love it.

The other thing is that groceries are REALLY REALLY hard to come by. You have to drive 30-40 minutes to a Rays in the next town over and buy gouged prices because "where else are you going to get it when you need it for dinner tonight?". The only other option is to drive to the closest "city" in Oregon and go to Thunderbird or Super Walmart, where you pack up on groceries for the month. Does anyone have any experience with grocery delivery when the commute is 6+ hours round trip??

The next closest actual city is Reno, and it is 4 hours away. There are cows grown here, and rice, and hay. That's about it.

My mom loves cooking meals, but I think she would hate doing it all the time. I was thinking she could do a "meal prep Sunday" thing for the elderly ladies around the valley, but I don't see how she would be able to make money on that. It kinda feels like taking advantage of them tbh.

This is always exhausting to think about, but I hope someone might have some experience or insight or good ideas. Any help, or even sympathy (lol) would be greatly appreciated. I, too, am about to move out there with them on account of helping my grandma after she took a tumble. My mom won't be able to do it by herself, but I think between the two of us we could start something profitable....just as soon as we think of it.
