Ethical Billing Practices? - Freelancer entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

Greetings all!

I'm a freelancer working for a remote client doing graphic design and digital marketing help. One of the new initiatives we're rolling out is Intercom (messaging platform for websites) and building out a funnel.

However, I haven't had much experience with this type of work and I'll have to educate myself via webinars, case studies, best practices etc. Basically doing a bunch of homework on this to ensure that we're setting it up correctly and everything is gonna work.

However, I have a question on if all of this 'homework' warrants billing them for my time for this? I'm paid on an hourly basis with them.

I don't want to be unethical and charge them for something I should. My initial reaction is most likely not, but if I was in their position I would pay someone to do the homework to ensure they do it correctly, ya know?

Curious to hear everyone's thoughts and thanks, everyone!

TL;DR - ethical billing question about whether or not I should bill a client for doing research about a new project they would like me to help build out for them. Yay or nay?
