Can we get a discussion going on canonical tagging? Do you use it for every page of your site? Is it overkill? earn by blogging adsense income

I've always thought of rel=canonical as a general SEO best practice but upon discussing it with engineers I've heard some skepticism that it would actually provide any tangible benefit unless you have multiple domains or serve the same page for different viewports. Would love to get some various opinions here.
