Well, that's how I landed my first sale. I'm a carpenter by trade and work with headstones during the summer. Last winter I ran into someone I work with who volunteers with the local Turkish community, helping them integrate into Canada and stuff like that. He happened to know someone who needed a headstone, so my card got passed on.
A few house calls later we had their design hashed out, I was full of killer coffee and baklava/flatbread, and a price worked out. These guys were more interested in keeping costs down than they were about a fast install, so I went with a U.S. based monument company that sold me the blank for a very reasonable price. It's taken 8 weeks or so from the deposit to install but that's not a crazy amount of time for a custom stone.
It's like I tell my apprentices, have skills entirely unrelated to your immediate job. I worked with an African dude who was an art teacher in Tunisia and that guy was amaaaazing at estimating jobs because he'd draw them out on a scrap of paper or his glove or something. I never thought I'd be working in tomb stones, but hey, turns out many of them have concrete foundations, which I can do.
