How is paying for a product on Alibaba handled? entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

I picked a manufacturer that didn't display any of the red flags that I've read about and we got the design/price figured out. Everything went smoothly and she sent me an invoice for the products we discussed. This is my first interaction with Alibaba and I certainly didn't know what to expect but the method for payment I was given was paypal and the address to send it to was

dan@companyimworkingwith.cn which certainly struck me as odd.

1. Is this a typicall payment method?
2. Say it is and I submitt the payment as request and reference the invoice they sent me, how does Alibaba come into play if they aren't part of the transaction. I'm used to things like ebay where you're never supposed to go outside of their framework if you want their protection.
