I have the perfect name for my startup. The problem is, the .com is taken, while the .co is not.
The .com is parked (i.e. not being using, simply points to GoDaddy's "this domain has been parked" page). Additionally, I've contacted the owner of the domain and he's willing to sell it, but at a price that I cannot afford at the moment.
For the moment, I've bought the .co with the intention of later buying the .com when I get some funding.
My startup has both a website and an app. Both have links to each other (i.e. the website has a link directly to the app, and the app has a link directly to the website).
One thing that needs to be noted is my demographic, the majority of which are younger people, age 13-35, who are typically more tech-savvy than other age groups.
My only worry is that if someone hears about our startup (from a friend, let's say), they first type into the address bar "domain.com", and see that it's parked. What percentage of those people will think "oh, this company must not have a website" and what percentage will proceed to Google us to find our .co?
Vine (the looping-video startup) seemed to get away with using .co (vine.co), while vine.com redirected to Amazon's website. This makes me think that .com isn't nearly as important these days as it used to be.
My questions are:
- Are there any solid statistics/data about how important it is to have a .com in 2017?
- Considering my situation, do you think it's safe to go with .co, and then later on buy .com?
Thanks!
