My brother mentioned to me a few months ago that his girlfriend has problems sourcing a particular product. I mentioned to him that if he found a supplier, he could use Shopify to setup an online store.
Yesterday he told me that he went away, setup a store on Shopify then linked it to Aliexpress, where he gets the products dropshipped. I was pretty shocked as he doesn't know much about e-commerce or digital marketing.
So far he's had 1k visitors to the site and had 3 sales and 35 people added items to the shopping basket. All he did to get the visitors was create a Facebook page and run an Adwords express ad through Shopify. Apart from that he's done nothing.
I checked his prices and basically he's getting the products at the price that they are on Aliexpress, then adding 50-100% to the price. He sold 3 items for double what he bought them for on Aliexpress.
I'm wondering if he's just got really lucky with the 3 sales he's had, considering his prices are actually really high compared to Aliexpress, or if he has an legit opportunity to make some money. The number of visitors he has has is encouraging as he doesn't know much about digital marketing and has basically just learnt everything as he's gone along.
I work in digital marketing, mainly SEO. But I've said I can help him out with adwords/SEO/Facebook/Instagram, I just want to know if buying from Aliexpress and then selling privately is a legitimate opportunity or if he just got really lucky with his few sales.
