Can someone explain to me like I'm 5 how NOFOLLOW links will affect SEO? earn by blogging adsense income

I've read a bit about NOFOLLOW backlinks but I was wondering if someone can explain it in reference to my situation.

I am a Wedding Photographer and I was planning on advertising with a local wedding magazine. AS well as being in print, I also have a listing on their website and from time to time they might include some of my real wedding photos in a blogpost.

I checked some examples of the adverts and blogposts today and when I inspected source, I noticed the ref=nofollow infront of the URL.

Does this mean that the link from a very reputable wedding website will have no effect on boosting rankings for those other websites they list?
