So I started an eCommerce "Business" online from Australia. Basically, I never registered it, but as a sole proprietor I marketed and shipped some product to prove it was a viable business model. Looking back it was a really dumb idea. Now I am trying to go through the correct procedures and registrations to make this legitimate.
The thing is, 95% of my product is shipped to customers in the US. There is NO good way to do this from where I am. It's either charge crazy amounts for shipping or have waiting times over a month (with no tracking).
So I ended up sending some product to a friend in the States to ship for me and it went REALLY well. Some small retail stores even started reaching out to the brand. But obviously I hadn't set this "business" up properly at the beginning - so I decided to put it on hold immediately to try figure things out before I got in legal/tax trouble. I really want to pursue this venture the correct way but honestly, I have NO clue what I'm doing.
I have freelanced online a lot and I taught myself everything I know, but unfortunately I never learned the proper framework/process/back-end of a real eCommerce store or Business. Living in a remote town also means I have no connections to proper accountants or lawyers. I have tried researching but I'm WAY in over my head and hoping that someone here can point me in the right direction. Where should I start to fix this?
And what are the legalities of hiring this friend (as an independent contractor) in the States to ship my product to people there domestically? Will I need to jump through a bunch of hoops and register a US business too?
