Recent audit of a travel site turned up 200+ orphan pages. All are low-quality duplicates based on 4-5 "templates" with just location names swapped out. (Presumably, someone had been thinking to use them for a targeted PPC campaign.)
Unfortunately, they have been indexed through inclusion in a sitemap, and as such, are stealing traffic from non-orphaned pages.
Would noindexing and waiting for them to drop out of the SERPS, prior to removal, be better than a straight removal and letting them 404 in Search Console? Or is there no real difference either way?
