A bit about me I was born in Singapore, studied/worked in the U.S. for 9 years and am now back in Singapore. I used to work at Uber. And then I moved to Shanghai to work at a travel startup. While I was living in China, I was reading r/entrepreneur and all the amazing things this community was doing (from poop bags to dicksbymail haha), so I decided to get off my butt and launch something.
About the business The Rocket Eyewear Company specialises in sunglasses based on the classic P3 shape. We basically took the original shape and updated it for a better-looking, more comfortable fit. After spending six months doing R&D with manufacturers in China, I've turned my focus 100% towards launching/marketing/branding within Singapore through Christmas - it's sunny all year here. Each pair of sunglasses costs 149 SGD, which is about 110 USD - so we're in the high-quality mass premium segment - not cheap, not prohibitive expensive.
Launch * Focused on Singapore for now - this is my first time doing e-commerce and I wanted to focus on a little city for me to figure out logistics. * Did a photoshoot with 25 good-looking friends for ~ 400 high quality model images. This should keep our Instagram pushing out good content through January. * Came up with a launch campaign themed around "happiness" whereby we give a free pair of sunglasses each day to the person with the best post about what makes him/her happy. * Engaged a marketing agency to help me reach out to influencers for our campaign. * Through the happiness campaign, we've grown the follower count by about 200 this week (Singapore is really small with 5m citizens for context).
Why I'm sharing * I've always wondered what it's like to launch a business. I'm by no means an expert, but I'm currently in the process of doing it.
