Website Builders and SEO earn by blogging adsense income

I have seen plenty of posts of people asking how to improve their SEO on website builders like Wix, Weebly, and Squarespace. These questions are usually met with "Wix is terrible", "Don't use Wix", or "Use WordPress".

What I am curious to know are the REAL, current, reasons why SEO is so terrible on website builders.

I am sure these builders must be working on these issues. Are there still tons of issues using a DIY builder in regards to SEO or has this just become more of a knee-jerk reaction?

I only ask because I have zero experience with builders like these. I only develop with JS and sometimes WordPress.
