My website had 4800+ URLs indexed when in reality I only have 472 articles published thus far. I checked and found that I had tons of duplicate content indexed on google. I had one URL to my post indexed and then like 5 to 20 tag urls indexed for the same post then also had categories indexed.
I started reading up on this issue and what I found was that google punishes websites for having duplicate content indexed by lower rankings.
I thought hey If I un-index my categories and tags that should help my rankings. Right!
To my surprise I lost about 30 to 40 % of my organic traffic because now my tags and categories are not ranking. So instead of getting more traffic im getting less traffic.
IT's been only 3 days so far.
What I want to know will it take some time for Google to realize that I'm helping it un-index duplicate content on my site and when google realizes this it will decide to rank my actual post URL higher?
Was this the right thing to do (especially when my tags and categories were ranking too).
Will I notice higher rankings after a few more days, weeks, months?
Has someone else here experienced this too? Please share your experience
I'm really looking for boost of confidence right now.
It would be lovely if someone told me You did the right thing by un-indexing duplicate content and Google will rank you higher within few more days.
