Some industries are very difficult to enter because of the high barrier to entry. Namely, pharmaceutical companies are some of the most difficult entities to set up without having millions of dollars to invest. Yet, pharmaceutical companies continue to be born. It is this question that really fascinated me; how can someone with no major capital, no intellectual property, and no promising results start a pharmaceutical company? In reality, starting a pharma company from scratch the traditional way is not feasible for a small-time Ph.D dropout. However, the decentralized nature of our modern labor marketplace (i.e. the internet), creates a promising opportunity.
I asked myself... would it be possible to create a virtual pharma company that collaborates with scientists across the globe to get a formulation to clinical trials. The answer was a resounding yes. Not only that, but it's been done before. This article talks about some of those.
This high barrier to entry, in my mind at least, is all very superficial. A "smoke and mirror" show if you will. Having been in many different kinds of labs, I can say that scientists (just like normal folks) don't know what they hell they're doing 50% of the time. So it shouldn't take some sort of unholy Alber Einstein-Elon Musk-Manbearpig hybrid to organize a research entity aimed at developing a novel therapeutic.
Having toyed with the thought for 2 years now, I'm ready to pull the trigger on this. My first step will be to recruit scientists with relevant research backgrounds to form a core investigative committee. From there, we will come up a target disease or condition. Next, research existing treatments for said condition. Postulate modulations to existing approaches or propose radically different ones. Outline experiments, then outsource experimental labor. In theory, this shouldn't take any money at all. In fact, I'm sure many of these scientists will be able to run these experiments on the hush in their home labs. (excluding animal studies if the labs are in the West).
I'd like to get some feedback on this rough idea and if anyone has ever had experience with virtual pharma, or pharma in general. Personally, I come from an academic background, so all I've been exposed to is the reseach end of science, not the business end.
Thanks!
