Trying to make a step into 3D manufacturing products.What can we do? entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

So last year, 4 months ago I got invited into a barebones startup, started as a small prop business and recently, after hearing from the owner(which is a friend of mine) that he had 3 desktop 3d printers, and just as he told me that he got a ROI for the three of them, I was IN.

Problem: 4 months into, been going back and forth with my day job and my MBA, and still can't figure out whether to reach a niche market or focus on a service based business don't really know what to do, you can make almost anything, from my own point of view, as a designer I would make a product that can only be made with a printer and offer it.

What I've been doing on my end: Since my friend called me, I'm supposed to be the guy that defines the business and to be honest this has been by far the most complex of the market research I've ever been doing, what I did after i hit the ground running was divide the prop manufacturing and general product development as two different businesses,

• WHY?! let me explain;We're in a niche era, and both businesses have different clientele, there is no strong movie production houses nearby,cosplayers(one of niche clientele) are not around year long and we're barebones,we're just two guys trying to start something from the bottom,we have dayjobs, we just wanna do stuff and as a business student I wanna prove to myself I can lift this as an actual Business startup.

So where are you now!(january 2nd 2018):Nowhere, the clients that my partner has got, often ask for small jewlery stuff and most of that stuff is licensed, and we don't wanna get into any legal trouble once we pump any production whatsoever so I unchecked licensed items out.

I can't define this as a running business yet, we have little to no clients and we're about to invest in a new 30 x 30 x 25 printer we will have 4 Printers now, and now we got a printer for an specific material, basic PLA,ABS,Ninja flex and ETX-FDA aproved bamboo material.

Background:we're both Industrial Designers, I've got Industry experience in furniture manufacturing, but have little product engineering and development experience, we're learning as we go.

*We reside in a key part of Mexico,near the American border and has a strong manufacturing culture, but almost NO product development or research(hence my reason to be a product designer) is being made,at least none that actually started from scratch, most of them are multinational companies seeking cheaper manufacturing operational services.
