So, I'm very new to the world of SEO and I'm reading books and doing courses to try to learn. My issue is this - We have a small, family run business that provides a local service. I put together a very basic website using Weebly, where our customers can find pricing and book online etc. I've gained some back links from some local and national directories, and have used keywords within the text of the website and titles etc, but have not gone overboard. What I can't work out is why our competitors are ranking higher on Google than us. They have really poor, cheap looking websites without the use of the keyword phrases for which I'm searching, and have similar back links to us, but they rank on the first page and we rank on the second. In my opinion, our website is put together a lot better and is far more user friendly and has more content relating to my keyword searches, but I just can not get us to rank any higher.
Could there be other reasons why they are ranking higher? And what else can I do to knock them off the top spots?
Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm completely stumped.
