Blog categories hierarchy question earn by blogging adsense income

I work for a content website run on Wordpress with over 1k categories and (previously) no hierarchy or meaningful breadcrumbs. We post content daily about specific brands in a few areas.

Last year at the advice of an SEO agency we contracted with, we had started to add a layer to categories making the Brand name the parent. For example: - Brand —- Brand Reviews —- Brand News —- Brand Coupons (Repeat for every brand we cover)

We haven’t fully transitioned over to this system, but it strikes me that this still leaves us with a very high and potentially undesirable # of top level categories. In addition, some of these categories have literally one post. For the categories which we have added structure for, there’s been no change in ranking (over at least 6 months). So I’m actually wondering if what we should be doing is: - Reviews —- Brand A Reviews —- Brand B Reviews —- Etc - News —- Brand A News —- Brand B News —- Etc

That seems to make more sense to me from a user perspective, any thoughts on if it may be more beneficial for SEO as well? Specifically since it reduces the number of top level categories down to a manageable number?

This has one other benefit from my perspective too, which is that these generic categories already exist and the posts are actually categorized into them already (in addition to being in their branded category). So it doesn’t dramatically change the content already in both categories, just adds organization if that makes sense...
