Faceted Filter Navigation - Stop with canonicals or robots.txt? earn by blogging adsense income

Our ecommerce site uses filter navigation for our products, which creates unique URLs that are INDEX, FOLLOW.

As far as I know there are two ways to solve this:

1) Disallow URL parameters with robots.txt

2) Use canonicals to point all URL extensions back to the main domain

I've read that the problem with using robots.txt to stop the index is that you lose all those internal links that disallowed pages would usually give. But that this method saves our crawl budget.

I've also read that while canonicals might save the internal links, it will still waste crawl budget.

Any pointers on the best approach here?
