I was recently added to a team getting Adobe Site Catalyst (SiteCat) web analytics results, the first time I've really seen analytics. One thing it tracks is referrer domain. A SiteCat guy said it uses cookies to track even across sites that have no relation to each other. I asked him if it would even work if somebody was coming from Joe Schmoe's personal small site which has absolutely no special tracking or plugins or anything else, and he said Yes. In other words, there is something over and above sites that is able to tell where you come from and go to, which does not need to have anything actively running on any of the sites involved, in order to do this. (I think.)
It makes perfect sense to me that someone could uses cookies to track the actions of a particular visitor within their own site. But to be able to tell where they come from seems like it has to operate on a completely different level.
I also gather that a number of different analytic systems out there are able to do this. It's not special to Adobe or other tools.
If I try to Google on how this works, all I find is articles that talk about using cookies to track a person at a given site. I can't find anything that specifically talks about how it would work across sites.
Is this making sense... how does SiteCat (and other tools) track referrer domain?
Maybe I just don't know the right terms to search on.
