How much do "extra" words like "in" affect a keyword? (i.e. vinyl siding installation IN Chicago instead of vinyl siding installation Chicago) earn by blogging adsense income

I write for a company that builds websites for other companies. I have been hired as their copywriter and have been doing this for awhile. I am a strong writer trained in PR and Journalism, but I never had much exposure to SEO. I get the concept. But what I'm wondering is... how much will the addition of a word to a keyword like "vinyl siding contractors Chicago" affect the effectiveness of said keyword? There are only so many ways I can think of to use the keyword worded EXACTLY like that without sounding dumb. And eventually...they sound dumb.

Thoughts? Advice? Note: I'm only talking about the content (web copy, blogs, etc. NOT the headers)
