How to judge potential opportunity on Amazon? entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

I know a lot of you guys are running successful Amazon businesses. I am considering starting my own Amazon business coming up but I wanted to seek some advice before I jump into it.

A little backstory:

I work for a guy who imports a product from his home country. He started his own online business and within the last two years has expanded into Amazon. He easily does 50k a month is sales just from Amazon(I know because I pack and ship these orders for him) I also handle a lot of backend stuff like managing the Amazon account. Which puts me in a very interesting situation. I have a lot of knowledge about packing and shipping, as well as how to import the products from his home country, and how to run an Amazon store account.

I've talked to my boss about bringing in more products from his home country, and he says that he doesn't have the time, energy, space, or motivation to bring on new products. Even though there are hundreds if not thousands of products he could bring.

This puts me in a situation where I could import products myself and sell them if I wanted too. I wouldn't be stepping on his business because he has told me that he doesn't want to get involved in any other products. He also said he would be willing to help me import with his connections if I wanted to do something like start a business or Amazon store.

So I feel like opportunity is plentiful right now for me, the problem is I don't have a ton of capital(I have some but I'm hesitant to go all in) and I'm in a bit of a tight spot in terms of money/risk.

I'm willing to take a risk but I wanted to do some research and feel confident before I put money into something.

So my question to you guys is, how do you feel out the market on Amazon? What kinds of things are you looking for before you introduce a new product to Amazon?

Obviously you don't want too much competition but you also want some competition so you can judge salability.

Is there any tools out there that can tell you how often things are searched for on Amazon or some similar analytical tools?
