Just starting out. I use stencils to design clothing. Should I commission my own art or use mass produced ones until I can gauge interest? entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

Hi everybody,

I am starting my own small line of clothing. I am going to take unbranded clothes and use dye and stencil designs to make them unique. It is a small-time hobby business of mine and I don't expect to make a ton of money, but it is fun and there has been decent interest so far.

My current plan is to use stencils that I purchased from another company and incorporating their designs onto the clothing. I have permission to do this as long as I don't take credit for the designs and the items are all handmade (not mass produced). I also have no copyright or anything. These are VERY generic designs (anchors, fish, cats, etc), and nothing that would be instantly recognizable as belonging to this stencil company.

My thoughts were to start out like this to gauge if there is actually any interest in my ideas. If there is interest ,or it becomes a larger entity than my dying clothing in my basement, then I would commission similar designs and use those instead (while holding the copyright). I'm kind of nervous to go "all-in" if this ends up being a total misfire.

What do you guys think? Should I bite the bullet and commission the artwork right away, or just play with generic mass produced stencils until I actually have some business.

Without artwork, my start-up costs are around $300 bucks.
