A few months ago a cousin approached me about building a website for him to take his brick-and-mortar business online. He sells relatively expensive technology items (prices range from around $1000 - $2500 a piece). My role would be to build and maintain the website, facilitate sales, etc.
Based on our conversations, I was led to believe he would be setting up a new business and giving a piece of the business to me (no discussion of how much I would get, but I assumed around a 15% stake).
As it happens, my cousin intends to operate the website as a DBA under the auspices of his current business. Such being the case, he wants to give me a piece of each sale on the site.
I don't really have a problem with this, however, I'd like to be compensated if he decides to sell the business (which he has mentioned he'd like to do, if the right offer comes along).
I'd appreciate any insights r/Entrepreneur might offer regarding the circumstances here. Should I push to have a the web business moved to a separate business, wherein I would receive a stake?
Or, if I agree to take a piece of each sale, how might I structure an agreement to ensure I'm compensated in case of the business sells?
An additional complication: I've built the site and it's ready for business, so my negotiating power is pretty weak at this point.
Many thanks for any and all feedback.
