Redesign/change theme and SEO earn by blogging adsense income

Hi, So I am about to start a redesign of my website (WP). It's currently running on Themify Ultra and I am going to change it to a new theme.

My first idea was to build the entire new site on a different domain and then import it when launching - But I worry about the SEO on the old pages. - Not to mention the worry of having duplicate content.

Can someone please advise me in this area?

I don't know how to access server so I mainly use plugins.
