Can someone explain DoFollow/NoFollow in 2017? earn by blogging adsense income

Hello, I am fairly new in the SEO field (1 year) and I hear people talking about things like "dofollow" and "nofollow" and some say that now they don't really mean anything since PageRank is dead...

If I want to rank a site in google, does it matter if my backlinks I build are dofollow or nofollow?
