Intern'l SEO mystery earn by blogging adsense income

I am working on a site with numerous language/country versions. It has a subdomain for each country and we have implemented hreflang. We have also claimed the search console accounts and specified the target country. However, the U.K site is still dominating in the US. Can anyone think why this would happen?

We do not have canonicals, but I thought hreflang would make it not needed. Any thoughts appreciated!
