Purchasing backlinks in articles - still a thing in 2017? earn by blogging adsense income

Been offered backlinks featured in articles on reputable websites for my niche. The author will write on a subject around my keywords, publish the article on another site, with a link to my site in the text.

I've done some research with conflicting views. One is that eventually, I will be punished. The other is that there is no difference between a paid link from a reputable website, and a genuine one.

What is the latest view on this practice? I would only purchase a few backlinks (less than 6).
