Question on using noun as business name. [X-post smallbusiness] entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

I have a business idea and a really good name. Unfortunately I just found out a very large company has recently started a child company in a related industry with the name I wanted to use.

The reason I'm asking about this is the name is a common noun. We are not currently in the same geographic market. Can I still use the name?

Anyone have anywhere I can do some reading on this subject?
