I started a new business organizing, cleaning, and selling other people's dust-collecting stuff - Any advice or critiques? entrepreneur how earn by blogging blog

Hey all.

I started this business a month ago. It hasn't gotten its "legs" yet but I feel confident it will.

Basically, in the mornings at about 10am I go walk up and down an entire neighborhood block, about 70 houses a day. I knock on the door, if they answer, I introduce myself and give them a flyer. If not, I leave a flyer. From that I get a few calls a week about my rates and 9 out of 10 times they need it that day or the next few days.

I basically pull out the majority of what's in the living space or garage. I use vertical space to organize it. If they have the $$ I offer to go buy racks or bins to organize.

While organizing, I find things that are either

A) junk that is trash. B) things that might be of value. and C) the 'maybe' pile.

I go through with the client and we either donate a few things to charity, sell the things that might be valuable and I get 40% of the profit, or toss things in the trash.

So far, out of the clients I've gotten, everyone I've helped has not paid me out of pocket. Most people have gotten a few hundred dollars after paying me my fees.

So there you go. I go knock on doors like a Realtor, hand out flyers, come back to the area and do some manual labor for 4-5 hours for a 2 car garage, then make a few more bucks by selling things to my network, craigslist, amazon or ebay. And I'm my own boss. I like it so far but I'd like to get a few more clients a month so I'm not reliant on random gigs for saving money.
