Can too many heading tags really hurt your SEO? earn by blogging adsense income

I'm reading Google's Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Starter Guide where it mentions the following:

Too many heading tags on a page can make it hard for users to scan the content and determine where one topic ends and another begins.

I'm working on optimizing our blog for search engines and all of our articles are filled with heading tags. The intro and headings will often be in H3, the main body in H4, and photo captions in H5. We don't seem to be using any H2 tags. We have almost no paragraph tags.

Should I go back and change the H4 and H5 tags to paragraph tags or does it not matter at all?
