I'm looking for retail space in a relatively large city to open a cafe with a business partner. Based on discussions we've had with other cafe/small business owners in the area, we've identified the type of neighborhood location that we'd like to occupy. However, it's been difficult over the last month to actually find open locations for the business.
Now, I never expected to have found the perfect place after only one month of looking, but I just want to make sure that I'm doing all that I can in the searching process to make sure that when the right place does open up, that I'll have eyes on it and that I'm spending my time effectively.
So, other than Craigslist, how do you small business owners look for commercial space to operate? We'd like to open in/around a city neighborhood. Just driving around and looking spaces doesn't necessarily seem like the most efficient use of time, but I'm beginning to think that this might be the go-to option. It seems like a good portion of open commercial spaces aren't actually listed online, but I may very well just not be looking in the right places.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
