So my co founder and I released an app. Its not huge, its a niche market, and its not going to be the major breadwinner. It was always supposed to be nice passive income via monthly subscriptions when we monetize. We haven't monetized yet because its only available for iOS and more people in our market have Android.
Both of us are growing a bit impatient and want to monetize already so he's decided to offer to learn React development and release it on Android and in return for this, he expects the split to go from 50-50 to 90-10 because as he puts it "he's assuming all the risk taking the time to learn React and release it on Android".
While he is taking risk in the sense of his time, the app is already out there and I, as the product manager and idea guy, have managed to successfully market this and get users extremely engaged. Our numbers arent massive, but they are good for such a niche market. At first I was entertaining the thought, but the more I think the more of a slap in the face this feels like. He's constantly emphasizing how much time he puts into this even though the app hasn't been updated since November. And I too have spent day and night reaching out to people first for beta testing and then post release to get the word out so its not like I was a lazy co founder who didnt bother to get users once we released it. I held up my end of the agreement as well.
He's giving me this ultimatum of giving up 90% of what I helped create or he'll abandon the project and frankly, I don't know if I could have any peace of mind if I agree to accepting terms that are just plain greed. Wondering what you guys think. If i don't accept, I will have 100% of nothing. If I do accept, I will be angry every single day if we get 800 or so paying users and charge a subscription of say $3, he would pocket over $2k and I would get $200 for getting the app to the point that 800 users were even viable paying users. There is not as much risk as he makes there out to be, he knows through our engagement metrics that this will likely monetize, and he just wants "more" money for himself because he ran into some financial issues (like I haven't?!).
The more I think about it, the angrier I get. Im not a greedy person. I let him go weeks without replying to me on Skype or emailing me back throughout the development process bec I know he's a busy guy and I treated this like a side project which it was. And he did this in his spare time, even though he put in a ton of work obviously to make a great app according to my vision. We've gotten along really well before all of this, but now I feel like this has just made me jaded. I would be willing to go 70-30 with him to keep this going, but his claims that he deserves 90% bec he "can work on a lot of other projects that could possibly bring in a lot more money" really isn't my problem. And he's also using this as a reason to learn React so that he can be more appealing to future employers yet making it seem like he's the one doing me all the favors here.
